Chilly temperatures and sunshine beaming from a cloudless blue sky made the backdrop for the Harvest Festival at Cabin John Village. From flowers and produce in shades of vivid orange and deep red to live music and twisted balloon art for children, event goers soaked up the beauty of the changing seasons.

There were pumpkins aplenty including the wooden, decorative variety that were carved by hand and painted orange by Collin Clifford of Clifford Creations. His woodwork offerings included bowls and cutting boards.

“There’s been a large crowd all day,” he said “Perfect weather for it.” Clifford also works as a physical education teacher at White Oak Middle School in Silver Spring.

In the midst of the seasonal celebration, Amelia Meyers Rosenwach and her two children, five year-old Lila and two year old Helena, danced to the beat of music from a live DJ. Lila, dressed like a Disney Princess, pranced and bowed as though she were in front of a live audience.

“She loves to dance,” said Meyers, who is an actress and the reigning Mrs. Maryland Petite USA.

A booth teeming with green plants like cacti and flowers in vibrant oranges and deep-reds was the offering from Steven Ornstein of Edge Floral Event Designers.

Part of his display was an antique truck that he’d planned to decorate with flowers. However Ornstein’s plan was thwarted by eager children who were mesmerized by the vehicle.

“My plan was to put flowers on the top,” he said. “We usually do that, but today the kids were climbing in it, so I decided to let the children have fun with it.”

Among those enjoying the truck were Marlee Shadman and her children five-year old Ava and three-year old Mia.

“The line for balloons was long so we decided to check it out while we were waiting for it to get a little shorter,” she said. “The festival has been great. The kids are loving it.”
