50 Years for Wayside and Bells Mill

Elementary schools turn 50, celebrate a half century of education

Two Potomac elementary schools will celebrate 50 years of educating students this month.

Both Bells Mill Elementary and Wayside Elementary are now 50 years old and have plans to welcome all past and present students, staff and neighbors to celebrate with them.

WAYSIDE IS FIRST with the anniversary school carnival and open house, planned for 1-3 p.m. Saturday, May 18 at the school, 10011 Glen Road, Potomac.

“Rain or shine, the carnival will be held from 1 to 3 p. m. and will include rides and games for all ages,” said Amy Oram, a member of the Wayside PTA executive board. “Gregorios [pizza] and Chuy’s [Tex-Mex] will be on-hand providing delicious food. Snacks and ice cream will also be available to purchase. It will be Wayside’s biggest carnival yet!”

All Wayside alumni and the community are encouraged to join the celebration, she said.

The school will hold an open house from 2:30-4 p.m. Alumni, students, teachers, parents and the community are invited to look through old photos, meet former teachers and alumni and reminisce about the past 50 years at Wayside.

There will also be a special unveiling of the fiftieth anniversary art project, which was done in conjunction with HM Concrete and Design of Potomac. County Councilmember Andrew Friedson, a former Wayside student, is scheduled to be at the open house.

THE BELLS MILL ELEMENTARY 50th Anniversary and Reunion will be held the week of May 20 through 24 with an all-day event Thursday, May 23.

Students, parents, alumni and friends are invited to celebrate with an open house May 23 and enjoy student performances. Several food trucks will be on site for the evening so visitors can have supper on the lawn and tour the building. There will be a school wide art project that will be hung as a permanent part of the building

Former students and staff members are invited to share memories, photos and other memorabilia or speak with current students.

Families, students and alumni may share their fondest memory of Bells Mill in an electronic form and email to Robert_D_Hirsch@mcpsmd.org.

Bells Mill related pictures from the past, can be scanned (identify the year/decade and give a description) and emailed to Jerri_L_Oglesby@mcpsmd.org or Rose_M_McKee@mcpsmd.org.

T-shirts, mugs, yearbooks, and other memorabilia that can be displayed, can be labeled and dropped off at the main office. Great care will be taken, and items will be returned as soon as the program ends on May 23.

To participate in speaking with current students or speaking at the kick-off pep rally on May 17, email Tracy_S_Tabachow@mcpsmd.org.
