Montgomery County will open nine Early Voting Centers from June 12 to 19, from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Any registered voter may cast a ballot at any one of these sites on the same voting equipment used on Election Day.

Slates Set for Primary Elections
The filing deadline for candidates who plan to run for their party’s nominations was Feb. 25, and many races for local and state offices are now set. The Primary Election is scheduled for June 24. Currently there are no elected Republicans from Montgomery County, so in many cases the winners of the Democratic primary on June 24 will be the likely winner in November. Here is a list of candidates in some offices representing the Potomac area.

Will the Next Attorney General Defend Constitutional Ban on Gay Marriage?
Republican says he will defend amendment; Democrat is not so sure.
Virginia's next attorney general will have to stand in a courtroom and make a decision about whether or not the commonwealth's constitutional ban on marriage should be defended. Republican candidate Sen. Mark Obenshain (R-26) has been clear about his support for the amendment and his intention to provide a vigorous defense of marriage. Democratic candidate Sen. Mark Herring (D-33), on the other hand, has yet to take a position on whether or not he will defend the amendment.
Silence of the Court
Justices deny public access to shield personal conversations.
The Virginia Supreme Court operates in silence, denying public access to audio recordings of its oral arguments. Unlike the U.S. Supreme Court, which denies video recordings but allows audio recordings, the commonwealth's top appeals court has a complete blackout on public access to proceedings. In a written response to questions from Connection Newspapers, the Office of the Executive Secretary of the Virginia Supreme Court explained that audio records were once public, but the installation of new equipment in January 2008 created new concerns for justices.

Telegraph Road Interchange Project completed. Complete with 11 new bridges and flyover ramps, the $265 million Telegraph Road Interchange Project is officially opened. Virginia Secretary of Transportation Sean T. Connaughton along with federal, state and local officials celebrated the completion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, April 4.
Environmental Concerns Prompt Dissenting Vote
County Council approves spending for artificial turf at Wootton.
Councilmember Marc Elrich took an authentic stand against artificial turf. “I continue to be concerned with the health and environmental impacts,” he said. “I’ve talked with toxicologists and in the space of five minutes I get information that is reassuring and then I get information that is disconcerting. It’s hard to know where to come out.”
Letter: Importance of Organic Farms
Gov. Martin O'Malley's letter was timely and appropriate. His letter clearly recognizes the increasingly critical role that small, local farms play in the protection of our State and National food supply. At the same time, the Governor recognized the benefit to Montgomery County students and future farmers, of having a resource where they can learn about the food chain and organic farming practices.
