Michael Porter Denker, 66, co-owner of Hopkins & Porter Construction, a residential design/build firm based in Potomac, died May 22, 2013, at Casey House in Gaithersburg. He had been diagnosed with melanoma in the summer.

KEEN Sports Day gets volunteers from Au Pair of America
“I loved volunteering at the KEEN Sports Day,” said Camila Souza, who works for a Potomac family through Au Pair of America. “It made me realize that I can make a difference just by giving a high five — or by cheering on these young people as they run bases or learn a new dance. I was there to give him support — but he gave me inspiration.”

Two Potomac Residents Reflect on Decades
Ellen Breen turned 95 on May 5, 2013. Her granddaughter plans to be married in September. “If I am alive, I am going,” Breen said. Her grandchildren call her Rah Rah. “I love it. It’s one of my favorite sounds. When they say it it really means something.” Dennis Lewis is 75.

A group of food trucks operating in Montgomery County has a website making it easier find out where they will be. Visit MoCofoodtrucks.com, then click on the logo of any food truck to locate it. The site currently lists 16 trucks in the area, several of which have stops in Bethesda.

Muslim Foundation Honors Community Service Volunteers

More than 300 people celebrated the benevolent work of the Montgomery County Muslim Foundation at its annual community cookout at Black Hill Regional Park. The May 5 event honored the many volunteers whose energy and efforts made the MCMF’s 2013 Food Drive and other service projects a success.

Claire Proffitt, president of Friends of Montgomery County Animals, held the organization’s annual spring luncheon meeting at her Potomac home on May 21. Among the 60 guests were three four-footed “keynote barkers” from the Canine Section of the Montgomery County Police Department’s Special Operations Division.

Corey McCleaf will bring 33 varieties of fruit to the Potomac Farmer’s Market this summer. Emily Starck will sell 53 varieties of heirloom tomatoes during the farmer’s market season, which runs Thursday afternoons from May through October at Potomac United Methodist Church. Keisha and Scotty Sherman, of Simply Delicious Desserts, work with 50 pounds of rhubarb every morning, and make breads, cakes, ginger strawberry tea, scones, cookies and cupcakes. They also brought their “goodies” to the Strawberry Festival last weekend.
Dick Hagen and ‘Hawaii:’ Potomac Hunt Race Heroes
A loose horse adds drama to 61st annual race program.
Headed down the half-mile homestretch, going hell bent for leather toward the finish line, were six race horses and their jockeys all vying for the Labadie Mill Perpetual Trophy, a mile and a half flat race for ladies only. It was the fifth race of the Potomac Hunt’s 61st annual race program. It was not exactly billed as the featured event, or the most exciting. That was soon to change.
