Dear Dog Lovers,

Bella and Pearl

Bella and Pearl

The following was posted on PetConnect Rescue’s Facebook page. For more information about PetConnect see www.petconnectrescue.org/

We are Bella and Pearl, two big ol’ senior dogs with great big hearts and a lot of love to give. We are Labrador Retriever mixes and maybe mixed with a little Newfoundland, too. Please read our story and after you hear all that we have been through we hope and pray you will consider adopting us. We wake up every morning and wonder if this will be the day our dreams will come true, the day someone will come forward and say they want to give us a home. We have had a hard life to be honest. Our former owners were drug addicts and they didn’t know how to take care of us. Then one day they simply were no longer there. We didn’t know what to do, so we made our beds under the porch of our ramshackle house and waited for help. We waited a long time. Thank goodness we had each other. We eventually learned that one of our owners took his own life and the other was arrested and put in jail and that explains why they never came back. Kind people in our neighborhood kept leaving food for us, and finally one day someone took us to the local shelter in Florence, S.C. That wasn’t easy either. We had food and water and a roof over our heads, but we were very scared. We understood that if someone didn’t adopt us soon, our journey would end there. We are both on the older side (Pearl is graying on her muzzle and Bella has some arthritis) and we were completely overlooked at the shelter. Then one day a miracle happened. A volunteer from PetConnect Rescue heard that we were two of the sweetest dogs ever, she saw how sad we were and just in time we were saved from the euthanasia room. We now are in a foster home in Maryland and you can’t imagine how grateful we are to be safe. But we still desperately need a family to call our own. We don’t ask for much — just a soft bed to sleep in, a small fenced yard where we might hang out and enjoy the afternoon breeze and most importantly someone around to love us. We have a lot of love to give in return, we promise. In spite of all the hardships we have been through, we are as gentle as gentle can be. We even know our manners and will come when called and sit if you ask us and we always listen. We would never have an accident in the house either. We cannot imagine being separated because we have been through so much together already and we are ever so devoted to each other. Yes, we are on the older side (Pearl is 13 and Bella is 11) but we are very calm and don’t ask for much — just the chance in our senior years to finally have a real home. Just so you know, Pearl loves to be brushed and to be around people as much as possible. She has so much love to give, love on her and she will love back on you even more. Bella is a little younger at 11 and even though she is heartworm positive (she is being treated with Doxycycline) she still enjoys playing fetch and spending time outside. Bella, like Pearl just wants someone to love. We know it’s going to take a very special person or family to want to help two older girls like us. All we ask is for someone to allow us to quietly live out the rest of our years together. If that someone would just give us a little corner of their home, we will be the most grateful dogs ever. We won’t be a bother, we promise. If you would consider adopting us please, please, please contact our adoption coordinator, Lizette at lchanock@gmail.com or visit petconnectrescue.org. Thank you so much for reading our story.

Love,

Bella and Pearl

P.S. Because we are "on the mature side," we will require a home with few steps and a fenced yard. We will also need an adopter who is home a good part of the day, as we require more frequent trips outside. #Seniordogsrock #adoptdontshop
